This cup is from a service most likely made for John Somerville (1765-1819) a gentry farmer from Somerset, England, who became the 15th Lord Somerville. He was President of the Board of Agriculture, and helped introduce merino sheep to England after his encounters with the breed during his travels in Spain and Portugal.
He became Lord Somerville in 1796 when his uncle, Lord James Somerville, died without heirs.
