Object Name Cup, Coffee
Description This cup is from a service made for a member of the Lane family of England. Several members of the family were involved in the China Trade and could have commissioned the service. One possibility is Henry Lane, a supercargo, or merchant, active in Canton in the 1780s. In 1788 he was accused of dealing in opium, which was illegal but commonly smuggled into China by merchants. He was acquitted of the charges. Another possibility is Thomas Lane, who was managing-owner of ten vessels that sailed to China between 1762 and 1794.
