This cup is from one of four services made for Richard Baker and his wife Elizabeth Bateman.
Richard and Elizabeth lived at Orsett Hall, the Essex estate they purchased in 1746. Richard died on April 22, 1751, aged 43. His funeral hatchment (a diamond-shaped panel decorated with his arms) survives in Saint Giles and All Saints Church in Orsett, England. Elizabeth outlived Richard by nearly four decades, dying on October 5, 1790, aged 80.
