Catalog Number 2010.22.23
Object Name Cup, Coffee
Description This cup is decorated with the arms of the Derby family of England. However, the arms may have also been used by the Dear family, as two punch bowls made in 1770 survive with these arms and the inscription "Edward Dear Canton Anno Domini 1770" and "Thomas Dear Canton Anno Domini 1770." It was not unknown for individuals to simply appropriate arms of another individual for their own use, and that is possibly what happened in this instance.
