This cup is part of a service made for Abel Chapman of Highbury Park, Middlesex County, England. This is the third of three services made for three generations of descendents of Sir John Chapman, Lord Mayor of London in 1688.
Abel Chapman was managing owner of four ships at Canton between 1786 and 1802. He eventually married a Miss Bell of Essex and died in 1824.
