This cup is from a service made for Cosmo George Gordon, third Duke of Gordon.
Cosmo was named after Cosimo de Medici III, Grand Duke of Tuscany and descendant of the Renaissance ruler of Florence of the same name. A Scottish peer, he sat in the House of Lords and was made a member of the Order of the Thistle, Scotland's highest chivalric order. In 1741 he married Anne Gordon.
