Catalog Number 2008.9.375
Object Name Cup, Coffee
Description Though the arms are incorrectly painted, they are most likely of Hay quartering M'Nair impaling Maxwell or Whyte. The service was probably acquired through Captain James Hay of the Honourable East India Company. He commanded the East Indiaman Lord McCartney and made four voyages to China in 1785, 1789, 1792, and 1794. He ordered a service for himself, and probably commissioned this one for a relative whose identity remains unknown.
